Before understanding Scrum, one need to be aware of What is Agile? Though Agility is well known term or jargon these days the basic fundamental of any Agile framework is based on iterative development and requirement evolution. Any framework can be agile as far as its in line with Agile manifesto, values and Agile principles.
Scrum is one of them. Scrum in a very simple term is a framework to implement agility in a easy manner. Scrum word is taken from rugby where team is moving to the target together. Scrum is very famous these days for development due to its simplicity. Its very simple to implement and if one has a focused approach Scrum can do wonders in project. The challenge comes when one has to master Scrum. As mentioned by Kenn & Jeff in their guide, its easy to understand and implement Scrum but extremely difficult to master it
Scrum has three dimensional framework which includes Roles, Artifacts & Ceremonies, moderated by rules. All four aspects are equally important for successful implementation of Scrum. Failing any of these may make one thing that s/he followed Scrum but it has adversely effected his/her project.
Scrum in itself, by following its framework, emphasize on value delivery to customers. As it has defined time period for different ceremonies, its fast in delivering value and controlled by customer involvement and prioritization at a very frequent instances.
How does it work is the next question?
A simple diagram can explain it better than any explanation.
This is a very common and widely used picture of Scrum framework. Product backlog which is adjusted as per customers priority and managed by Product Owner is ready with the requirements. Requirements for next sprint is taken and Sprint backlog is created. These requirements are worked upon in next 30 days with a daily scrum every 24 hour. At the end of 30 days a working software called increment will result.
