The ‘Java web component developer certification exam’ or the OCEJWCD 6 certification is one of more advanced Java certifications from Oracle. We have had already discussed the important steps in becoming OCEJWCD 6 certified in an earlier blog post. The first step that was stated was to collect the resources for the exam. This blog post will focus on the important book and online resources for the exam.
1. OCEJWCD Study Companion – Certification Study Guide by Charles Lyons
This is the one of the books that has been written specifically for the OCEJWCD 6 exam. It is also one of the books that is recommended to be read cover to cover to get a firm understanding of the topics for the exam. This book is only a complete study guide and not an exam cram book. Reading from this book will help you only comprehend the topics of the exam. At 655 pages, this book is quite exhaustive and presents all the 12 topics of the exam fairly well.
The exam objectives like Servlets, JSP, Tag libraries, Java EE patterns, custom tags, expression language(EL) are covered in great detail. Ample codes and examples are presented to reinforce the concepts. Revision questions and their explanations are given at the end of each chapter to test one’s knowledge of the topic. One free online mock exam of all the topics is also presented to the user to see where they will stand in a real exam.
2. Java Practice Questions: Oracle Certified Expert, Java EE 6 Web Component Developer (OCEJWCD) by Esteban Herrera
Unlike the OCEJWCD Study companion by Char Lyons, the ‘Java Practice Questions’ by Esteban Herrara consists only of questions pertaining to the exam. This book consists of 120 questions helping you understand your strength and weaknesses regarding each topic of the exam. As the book’s name indicates, this book is not a study guide but only tests your knowledge of each topic of the exam. This book needs to be used in conjunction with other study resources for the exam.
Each topic is given a different weightage and the number of questions presented for each topic varies accordingly. For example, the topic ‘Servlet’s environment’ contains 25 questions while the topic on ‘Asynchronous web applications’ contains only 5. This book is also available as a Kindle edition and paperback edition.
3. The website javaranch.com
Java professionals and those interested in cracking the certification need no introduction to the highly successful and popular ‘javaranch.com’. But still for the uninitiated and newbies into the Java programming world – javaranch.com is “the” community where discussions about different Java certifications occur. Javaranch describes itself as a “friendly place to learn Java programming”. (javaranch.com) javaranch.com was originally started by Kathy Sierra in January 1998(much before the social media era) but was then turned over to Paul Wheaton in January 2000.
This is the link to the OCEJWCD 6 forum on javaranch where one can participate and post queries regarding the exam : https://coderanch.com/f/18/java-Web-Component-OCEJWCD
One can also help other professionals with their queries regarding the certification. This enables one to become thorough with the topics related to the exam. Netiquette is maintained by the forum leaders of each certification group.
4. Oracle documentation
As already mentioned in an earlier post, the Oracle documentation is the most authentic source for the OCEJWCD 6 exam.
The JavaTM Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 API Specification can be referenced from this address: http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/api/
Similarly, the Java Servlet 3.0 final release can be referenced from: http://download.oracle.com/otndocs/jcp/servlet-3.0-fr-oth-JSpec/
Again, the JSP 2.2 specification can be referenced from this address: https://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/mrel/jsr245/index.html
It is good to go through the API specification, Java Servlet 3.0 specification and JSP 2.2 specification from Oracle to be absolutely well equipped before the exam. The Oracle documentation is the master documentation of all resources and reading it gives one more mastery and clarity of OCEJWCD 6 topics.
5. Whizlabs OCEJWCD 6 Online course
The Whizlabs OCEJWCD 6 course is another vital resource for the certification. Having served over 2 million users in over 125 countries, Whizlabs is a leader in Java certification training. The Whizlabs online course has
- 277 mins of Training Videos for all 12 objectives
- 5 Full length mock exams which have 460 unique questions

They also provide objective based practice tests and an exhaustive explanation with every question.
We have seen the five important books and online resources for studying for the OCEJWCD 6 certification exam. With the resources presented, you are sure to crack the exam! Good luck!
