What are the differences between SCJP and OCJP?

SCJP and OCJP are referring to the same exams. Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) is renamed as Oracle Certified Java Programmer(OCJP) when Oracle has acquired Sun Micro Systems. Before that, SCJP word is synonymous to Java Certification exams and it is one of the most popular certification for Java developers. That is the reason still people call that exam as SCJP.

It is important to clear the confusion around the naming of Java certification exams. The ambiguity started when Oracle has changed the Java certification’s name once it had acquired the Sun Micro Systems. When Java certifications are conducted by the Sun Micro Systems, the following are the name of the certifications:

• Sun Certified Java Associate(SCJA)
• Sun Certified Java Programmer(SCJP)
• Sun Certified Web Component Developer(SCWCD)
• Sun Certified Business Component Developer (SCBCD)
• Sun Certified Web Services Developer (SCWSD)
• Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA)

There are no ambiguity till the Java certifications names are changed.

What is SCJP equivalent exam now?

OCPJP 6 exam is the equivalent for SCJP. This exam is first renamed as OCJP and then it got name as OCPJP 6. After Java SE 6, Oracle has split the SCJP or OCJP into OCAJP and OCPJP. OCAJP exam is Programmer 1 and OCPJP exam is the Programmer 2 exam. If you want to write exam for Java 7 and above versions, there is no SCJP or OCJP certifications. You better correct the naming understanding and call them as OCAJP and OCPJP exams.
