After working in an organization for around a decade, you started feeling that you are accustomed with your current organization and established a special position in your company. You have mastered all areas of your job profile, company started considering you a critical resource and involving you in company’s important decisions. It sounds as if this is what each one of us dream for but there is a darker side to it. Don’t look on the short term achievements, look from the long run perspective. - Work in the field of increasing your general awareness: With everyday changing world and technology you need to keep pace with it. Read e-books, related Blogs and subscribe for monthly magazines of your area of interest, meet different people of with related knowledge, try to build a healthy relationships with them. Even if people try to ignore you look for a way to learn from them. Especially in case of companies with multiple functions like “operations, finance, IT, Human Resources, and Business Excellence, there is wide scope to learn and practice internally. To know about the process and functions of other departments you must have good network in the organization.
- Enhance your skills by education and training: Many organizations conducts corporate trainings, check out such opportunities in your organization. If you are planning to enhance your knowledge try to make best from the opportunities available to you.
- Explore options to improve your market value: You can improve your market value by doing a certification which carries high credibility globally. PMI offers many certifications, which are the best way to test yourself. Depending on your area of interest you can select one and go for it.
- Increase your professional network: Through internet you can be linked to as many professional as you want to. There are large number of online communities, groups and followers, where people with similar profile can interact with other each other, build their professional networks and investigate potential career opportunities.
Even if you are getting timely promotions and appreciation from your senior management, still you are best judge. Think honestly and ask to your “Do you really deserve it, have you really contributed for it?”. At times people stops thinking critically for themselves, resulting in wrong decision like continuing on the same profile with the same employer for years and years until, they become the target of recessions and downsizing or mass layoffs.
