Project Management Institute (PMI) announced that from beginning July 2019, it will move all of its certification exams to Pearson VUE, the renowned global examination platform. Till now, Prometric was the exam provider for PMI certifications. With this platform shift, PMI is claiming to ensure a better overall exam experience for the exam takers.
PMI Announcement
According to PMI announcement, all of its certification exams will be conducted by Pearson VUE worldwide (except China) from this time onwards. Although they didn’t explicitly punctuate the reasons for this change, we can presume some intuitions based on recent challenges faced by Prometric.
It was in 2007, Prometric became an independently operated subsidiary of Educational Testing Service (ETS). Till then, it was the part of Thomson Corporation. Despite its huge network of test centers and data management capabilities, Prometric faced many challenges ever since. Most of these challenges were technical problems during examinations. Moreover, there’s been a few cases of latency issues in many of Prometric-administered exams in recent times.
Consequently, many of the software companies including Microsoft ended their partnership with Prometric within this period and moved to providers like Pearson VUE; PMI is the last one in that list.
How will the Announcement Affect Exam Takers?
According to PMI, an exam taker will be the one who really gets benefited by this replacement. The following benefits can be availed by exam takers with Pearson VUE.
-
More Test Locations
Pearson VUE has more than 5000 test locations spanning over 160 countries whereas Prometric has roughly more than 3000 global test centers. Although it isn’t a considerable difference, finding a test center can become easier with Pearson VUE.
-
Convenience of Home Delivery
PMI-ACP® and CAPM® exams can now be proctored through online with Pearson VUE. Candidates can take these exams either from home or office with utmost convenience. No other PMI certifications are available for online proctoring at this time.
-
Global U.S. Federal and Military on-base Test Centre Network
Pearson VUE offers versatility to US service members by providing a global U.S. Federal and military on-base test center network allowing government and service members to test where they serve around the world.
Planning to take an exam on or before 30-06-2019?
If you are a person who’s planned to take the exam on or before 2019-06-30, then you can still take your exam at Prometric as usual. But for that, you must schedule your exam before 2019-04-19.
Planning to take an exam on or after 01-07-2019?
If you are a person who’s planned to take the exam on or after 2019-07-01, then Pearson VUE will be your exam provider. In this case, you’ll not be able to schedule your exams until 2019-04-19. On this date, registered candidates will receive exam information for Pearson VUE so that they can schedule their exam for a date on or after 2019-07-01.
The Takeaway
Simply saying, PMI will automatically guide its candidates to any one of the test vendors based on the timeframe the candidates opt to appear for the exam.
Those candidates who haven’t scheduled their exams till now have to know important dates on the transition timeframe of PMI certifications. These dates aren’t relevant to the candidates who’ve already scheduled their exams. These dates are
